ANTHONY C "WOOFIE" HUMPAGE, CSCS

Anthony Humpage or "Woofie", as he is known to fellow competitors and athletes around the U.S., is a USA Triathlon, Level I Coach and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Additionally, he is certified as an ULTRAFIT Associate. ULTRAFIT is a national association of elite-level endurance coaches. In testimony to the regard in which this group is held, the cycling magazine Velonews said: “earning membership in the group (Ultrafit Associates) is just a shade easier than getting a locker at Augusta National.”

Coach Woofie helps triathletes and other multisport athletes, ultramarathon runners, orienteers, expedition runners and mountaineers. He has achieved significant improvements in the performance of so-called "ordinary" athletes, and currently coaches athletes ranging from those competing only with themselves to those competing at a national championship level.

Coach Woofie is one of the few, if not the only coach or athletic performance specialist to focus only on Masters athletes. He generally, but not exclusively works with endurance and ultra-endurance athletes. Woofie continuously studies the latest research on Masters athletic performance and how to keep Masters athletes in the game. Woofie's coaching stresses athletic longevity as well as performance. That is, to physically equip his clients to continue their chosen sporting endeavors to whatever age they chose. He places great emphasis on individual attention and flexibility to help his athlete clients meet their goals, while also coping with busy work and home lives.

Preferring heart to raw ability, Woofie understands how to best prepare his athletes for their chosen sports. His own experience in the mid-90's of changing his life in his 40s -- from that of a severely overweight couch potato to ultra-endurance athlete gives him a unique perspective on the challenges facing many athletes, including newcomers to endurance sports. His own self-coached journey from first marathon to a 100-mile ultramarathon in sixteen months is told in the book "Running Through The Wall".

A nationally-known Masters ultra-endurance athlete in his own right, Woofie has completed triathlons at Iron and Half-Iron distance, marathons and ultramarathons at 50-kilometer, 50-mile and 100-mile distance and has participated in orienteering at a World championship level (24-hour). Woofie is a recognized authority on endurance hydration and nutrition, and competing in hostile environments. His expertise in this field was recognized by being selected to join the medical support team for the 2006 Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon the “World’s toughest footrace”.

Born in England, Coach Woofie is a resident of Scottsdale, AZ, where he has lived for the past twenty-one years.
